The bomb wiped out more than 4 sqaure miles of this city. Roughly 66,000 people were left dead, and 69,000 were left injured.
Nagasaki (11:02am, August 9, 1945) :
The B-29 bomb completely destroyed 1.5 square miles. It killed an estimated 39,000 civilians and injured about 25,000.
Damage to the Cities:
Fires were caused by the heat from the explosion and fires resulting from collapsing buildings, debris, damage to electrical systems, etc. Portions of the city underground were also affected. The only things left were the frames of some of the stronger buildings. Concrete buildings survived but had damage. 50,000 buildings in Nagasaki were destryed.
The Injuries:
Most of the injuries were burns, injuries from collapsing buildings, direct pressure from the bomb, and radiation injuries. There were two types of burns, flash burns and fire burns. The flash burns marked redness on the skin that over time made changes in the skin. Injuries from collapsing buildings and flying debris caused fractures and contusions. Radiation caused injuries the day of and days after. Radiation caused nausea, vommiting, inflammation of the throat and mouth, fever, and diharea.
After:
There was no significant reconstruction of the city after because of the slow rise of population. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki had an estimated population of about 140,000 people after the bomb. Apart from physical injuries to the people, psychological problems also occured. The terror traumitized the survivors. People went hysterical and many fled the city.
